Well, here we are again!  The leaves are turning crimson and gold and the cold winds are blowing.  Suddenly I want everything pumpkin spice!  And things like stew and hearty bread...meatloaf and mashed potatoes.  I could go on. And we are not even into the holidays yet!

If you are working on losing weight or eating healthier in general, this time of year you may be tempted to throw your hands in the air and tell yourself "Oh well, there's always New Years Resolutions".

Don't do it!  I am here to talk some sense into you before you let things get out of control.  There is no reason you can't make it through the holidays not only keeping weight gain at bay but even losing some weight and feeling great by the time January rolls around.  It just takes a certain strategy and a willingness to plan.

I hear all the time how the key to weight loss is getting your mindset right. “You have to really want it” or “You have to focus and commit to it no matter what comes your way”. Well, I think yes and no. Let me explain.

I have struggled with my weight for the great majority of my life.  I gained a bit OF weight when I was a teenager, and then a LOT of weight when I had my 5 babies. 

I was a constant dieter.  I was always thinking about it and planning my next diet, but I just never found anything I could stick to.  I didn’t know why, but I always seemed to lose my way.  I was on such a merry go round with the whole thing that I started to wonder if I was even capable of it and was maybe just a little crazy in the head.

There Is Nothing Magical About Starting A Diet In January

Every January many of us start to think about trying to lose some weight and get in shape.  After all the holiday food and perhaps a bit of overeating...we may have put on a few pounds.  It's natural to think of the new year as a new opportunity because it is.  The future is always a new opportunity.

But what about March?  What is so magical about January?  Why do we feel more motivated or give those thoughts about self-improvement more "air time" in January?  We really don't need to.  Especially if we have already let a few months slip by without really taking any action or falling short on the changes we wanted to make.

Do You Have A Clear Strategy For Dealing With Halloween Candy?

It’s coming...and there is candy everywhere! If you are trying to lose weight during the fall holiday season, it can be rough. It seems that there are not as many tricks as there are treats, lol. Here are some simple tips to come up with a strategy for dealing with it all successfully.
  1. Don’t open the bag of candy you bought for trick or treaters before Halloween. Remember, you bought it for the kids, not for yourself. Try and contain it to one night of temptation.
  2. Actually look at the calorie content listed on the packaging and plan your treat around that information. I plan on having 3 squares of dark chocolate and maybe a couple pieces of red vine licorice and maybe a tootsie pop. And I will count it towards my daily calorie goal.
  3. If you want to avoid candy altogether, get some dog poop out of your yard and smear it all around the candy bowl. That ought to stop you. ( I AM KIDDING HERE!) If you are trying to avoid it, you could not buy any at all and go out for...

4 Things You Can Do To Stick With Your Weight Loss Plan

 

 

Trying to lose weight can be an overwhelming task.  Here are 4 things you can do to increase your odds of success.

1.  PLAN AHEAD

Whatever plan you choose to follow, do yourself a favor and plan ahead.  Determine exactly how you will manage the day-to-day details of following your diet plan.  Make menus, shopping lists, foods to have on hand, etc.

2.  SET UP YOUR KITCHEN FOR SUCCESS

Where are the cooking pans, bowls, utensils etc. that you will need to prepare your meals?  Do you have measuring cups handy? Do you need to get a sharper knife to cut fruits and vegetables?  Think about how to accommodate  your selected diet plan.

3.  CONSIDER REMOVING TEMPTATION

Get rid of foods that are not included in your plan.  If that is not possible because of other food requirements in your household, find a way to store them out of your view or access.  Sure, there will be times when you have to resist eating...
