There Is Nothing Magical About Starting A Diet In January

Every January many of us start to think about trying to lose some weight and get in shape.  After all the holiday food and perhaps a bit of overeating...we may have put on a few pounds.  It's natural to think of the new year as a new opportunity because it is.  The future is always a new opportunity.

But what about March?  What is so magical about January?  Why do we feel more motivated or give those thoughts about self-improvement more "air time" in January?  We really don't need to.  Especially if we have already let a few months slip by without really taking any action or falling short on the changes we wanted to make.

So if you started out in January with high hopes but you kinda got bogged down, how do you start over now?  How do you make this your "new January"?  First, identify what went wrong.  Maybe it was that you didn't really have a plan.  When you don't have a clear plan, you don’t have a clear path and other things will get in the way.  Maybe you had a plan, but it was too difficult to stick with because it was too stringent or just plain painful.  Don't like salad? Pick a different vegetable that you do like.  Don't want to give up dessert?  Pick a light one and work it into your program.  There is no need to suffer through a stringent "perfect" weight loss plan. Losing weight takes time, so you need to figure out changes you can make that are not torturous to live with.  Maybe you planned to work out, but you didn't make time for it.  Maybe you need to make a habit of laying your gym clothes out the night before so you can find them easily or get a work out buddy so it's harder to get out of it when it’s time to work out. TRY different things. FIND what will work for you. 

And that is the next thing that you need to do.  Find something that will work for you.  Pick a plan that you can stick with for the long run, and that can be adapted to some sort of a maintenance plan or strategy.  You have to accept that lasting weight loss requires permanent changes.  The problem arises when we think it has to be drastic and fast.  It doesn’t.  You just have to move in the right direction and keep going in that direction. 

So that brings us to the third part of the solution.  You have to commit.  There is no way around this part.  Sometimes it will be hard, even with the best plan and best circumstances.  That’s just the way life is, and most of us get that.  It's just hard to put it into practice.  But you can do it.  I can do it. 

So what if January is over. So what if its March, or October, or the week before Christmas.  Today can be your new beginning. Start by identifying what went wrong or didn’t work for you.  Find a plan that you believe you can stick to and actually like what you eat.  Commit to following through. 

And if you fall, get back up again.  (No need to wait until next January)
